Outraged at Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad's slaughter of the Syrian people, Kamal (Aboubakr Bensaihi) leaves his home in Brussels' Molenbeek neighborhood, as well as his mother Leila (Lubna Azabal) and kid brother Nassim (Amir El Arbi), to go support the rebels' efforts as a cameraman. Despite his noble intentions, Kamal soon finds himself fighting in a war zone with ISIS calling the shots, while back home in Belgium, radical recruiters attempt to enlist his little brother too. Written and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, TV's MS. MARVEL and the unreleased BATGIRL), this audacious thriller rails against exploiters who peddle radicalization and brings its ripped-from-the-headlines story to the screen with verve, heart and sensitivity. It also incorporates the stylistic action sequences for which the filmmakers have become known and even some surprisingly effective rap musical numbers. Official Selection, 2022 Cannes Film Festival. DIR/SCR Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah; SCR Kevin Meul, Jan van Dyck; PROD Bert Hamelinck, Dimitri Verbeeck. Belgium/Luxembourg/France, 2022, color, 135 min. In Dutch, French and Arabic with English subtitles. NOT RATED
