WILL-O'-THE-WISP (2022)
[FOGO-FÁTUO]
Portuguese filmmaker João Pedro Rodrigues (THE ORNITHOLOGIST) engages with issues of class, race and climate change with gleeful aplomb in this riotous, post-Colonial, queer musical. In 2069, King Alfredo lies on his deathbed, reflecting on his bawdy youth. As a young prince, Alfredo (Mauro Costa) bucked tradition, defecting from his royal duties to become a volunteer firefighter. Surrounded by strapping men with a fountain of art history knowledge, Alfredo falls in love with the cheeky Afonso (André Cabral) in an interracial romance that brings Portugal's past, present and future to the forefront. Sexually explicit, audacious and featuring a memorable firehouse dance scene, you won't soon forget WILL-O'-THE-WISP. Winner, Director's Week Award, 2022 Brussels International Film Festival. Official Selection, 2022 Cannes, Toronto and New York film festivals. DIR/SCR/PROD João Pedro Rodrigues; SCR Paulo Lopes Graça, João Rui Guerra da Mata; PROD João Matos, Vincent Wang. Portugal/France, 2022, color, 67 min. In Portuguese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
