CARMEN (2021)
Fifty-year-old Carmen (Natascha McElhone, SOLARIS, THE TRUMAN SHOW) has dedicated her life to serving and looking after her brother, the Catholic priest in a picturesque Maltese village. But after he dies, she's left without a purpose β or a place to sleep. Free from responsibility for the first time, she dives into living with reckless abandon and starts doling out advice from the empty confession booth. Surprised by her subversive outlook, the town is charmed by their new "priest" and donations begin rolling in. Maltese-Canadian filmmaker Valerie Buhagiar delivers a crowd-pleasing, coming-of-middle-age dramedy featuring a luminous McElhone as a woman taking charge of her own narrative. Official Selection, 2021 Toronto Film Festival. DIR/SCR Valerie Buhagiar; PROD Coral Aiken, Pierre Ellul, Anika Psaila Savona. Malta/Canada, 2021, color, 87 min. In English and Maltese with English subtitles. NOT RATED
