PILGRIMS (2021)
[PILIGRIMAI]
Winner of Venice Horizons Award for Best Film at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, PILGRIMS is a slow-burn thriller following two amateur sleuths on an investigation-turned-recreation of a brutal crime. Indre (Gabija Bargailaite) and Paulius (Giedrius Kiela) are childhood friends who have reunited four years after the murder of Matas, Paulius' younger brother and Indre's boyfriend. Almost strangers, the two head to the small town of Kaunas to find out for themselves what really happened at the scene of the crime. They retrace Matas' steps, interrogating witnesses and recreating scenarios, hoping for some semblance of closure through their grief-filled pilgrimage. This offbeat detective story is the striking debut feature of filmmaker Laurynas Bareiša. Official Selection, 2022 New Directors/New Films. DIR/SCR Laurynas Bareiša; PROD Klementina Remeikaite. Lithuania, 2021, color, 92 min. In Lithuanian with English subtitles. NOT RATED
