FORGER, THE (2022)
Based on the memoir of graphic artist Samson "Cioma" Schönhaus, writer and director Maggie Peren's (COLOR OF THE OCEAN) rich historical drama pays tribute to a resourceful chameleon who deployed his endless inventiveness and charm to run circles around the authorities as a young Jewish man living in Nazi-controlled Berlin. It's 1940 and Cioma (Louis Hofmann, star of the hit Netflix series DARK) is hiding in plain sight, adopting the identity of a marine officer to avoid being deported like his family before him. His flair for creating new identities is matched only by his exceptional talent for forging documents — a skill he uses to craft masterfully forged IDs that allow others to flee the country. Meanwhile, he throws himself into the city's decadent nightlife under his assumed identity, living life to the fullest and defying the Nazis to stop him from enjoying his youth. But as the looming danger Cioma faces with each forgery closes in, he begins to realize that his only hope of survival will be to find a way out. Official Selection, 2022 Berlin International Film Festival.
