Damien (Damien Bonnard, THE FRENCH DISPATCH, Ladj Ly's LES MISÉRABLES) is a successful painter living a charmed life in the south of France. But he's susceptible to periods of intense mania, staying up for nights on end, unable to control his boundless energy. His wife Leïla (Leïla Bekhti, A PROPHET) is tirelessly by his side, devoted to both her husband and the well-being of their young son. Damien is eventually hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but it's only the start of their journey as a family. Belgian filmmaker Joachim Lafosse (AFTER LOVE, OUR CHILDREN) took inspiration from his own father's struggle with bipolar disorder for this intimate, harrowing and at times joyously moving portrait of familial love. Official Selection, 2021 Cannes Film Festival. DIR/SCR Joachim Lafosse; PROD Alexandre Gavras, Anton Iffland Stettner, Eva Kuperman, Antonino Lombardo, Jani Thiltges. Belgium/France/Luxembourg, 2021, color, 117 min. In French with English subtitles. NOT RATED
