COMPARTMENT NO. 6
[HYTTI NRO 6]
Co-winner of the Grand Prix at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen's (THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI) delightfully unconventional road trip romance follows two strangers from opposite sides of the tracks who form a surprising bond while travelling by train across Russia. Laura (Seidi Haarla, THE NIGHT SERVANTS) is a Finnish graduate student headed to Murmansk to see the remote port city's famous rock paintings. Having said goodbye to her Russian lover Irina, she's in a delicate emotional space as she contemplates the end of her time studying in Moscow. Her compartment-mate is the gruff, ill-mannered Ljoha (Yuriy Borisov), a keen vodka-drinker with a foul mouth, on his way to report for work at a large mine in the region. While the long journey drags on, what seems like a match made in hell slowly transforms into something else, as the pair begin to see through the cracks in the identities they each present to the world. A compassionate look at human connection which builds to an unexpected conclusion, COMPARTMENT NO. 6 is an atypical love story — of sorts — without heroes and heroines, but with an authenticity that makes audiences root for its flawed protagonists all the way to Murmansk. Winner, Grand Prix, 2021 Cannes Film Festival. Official Selection, 2021 Karlovy Vary, Toronto and London film festivals. DIR/SCR Juho Kuosmanen; SCR Andris Feldmanis, Livia Ulman, from the novel by Rosa Liksom; PROD Emilia Haukka, Jussi Rantamäki. Finland/Russia/Estonia/Germany, 2021, color, 107 min.
