SIDE STREET (1949) in 35mm
Naïve postman Joe Norson (Farley Granger) takes a dangerous shortcut to securing a nest egg for his pregnant wife (Cathy O'Donnell) — stealing what he thinks is $200, but is actually 30 grand from the office of a shady lawyer. When Joe tries to give himself up he only gets in deeper, careening for his life through the treacherous streets of Manhattan, pursued by cops and crooks at every deadly turn. This is a much more noir version of NAKED CITY, with director Anthony Mann pulling out all the stops, abetted by Joe Ruttenberg's stunning location cinematography. (Note courtesy of Noir City.) DIR Anthony Mann; SCR Sidney Boehm; PROD Sam Zimbalist. U.S., 1949, b&w, 83 min. NOT RATED
