BARBED WIRE (1927)
Pola Negri gives an impressive performance as Mona Moreau, a French farmer whose family's land has been requisitioned to house German POWs during WWI. Negri's native anti-German sentiment and the fact that her brother is fighting against them on the western front fuel an intense hatred for "les Boches," with whom she must now interact each day as she puts them through their paces working on her farm. But she experiences a profound change of heart after working alongside and becoming better acquainted with one of the German POWs, the kind and gentlemanly Oskar Muller (Clive Brook). As the war rages on and losses mount on both sides, is there any hope for love to bloom? DIR/SCR/PROD Rowland V.
