CRIME OF MONSIEUR LANGE, THE
[LE CRIME DE MONSIEUR LANGE]
Jean Renoir and screenwriter Jacques Prévert's breezy romantic comedy contains surprising depths of anti-fascist political awareness. Batala (Jules Berry), the greedy and grasping boss of a low-rent pulp publishing house, always dodging creditors and abusing his staff, disappears and is presumed dead. In his absence, the employees reorganize as a collective; "Arizona Jim," the Western hero creation of young yarn-spinner Amédée Lange (René Lefèvre), becomes a massive hit; and love blooms between Lange and his neighbor Valentine (Florelle). Despite all of the collective's hard work and success, the business still belongs to Batala…is he really dead? DIR/SCR Jean Renoir; SCR Jacques Prévert, Jean Castanier; PROD André Halley des Fontaines. France, 1936, b&w, 83 min. In French with English subtitles. NOT RATED
