DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE, THE
[LE CHARME DISCRET DE LA BOURGEOISIE]
A sextet of society types, including characters played by Fernando Rey, Delphine Seyrig, Stéphane Audran and Bulle Ogier, maintain their decorum in the face of increasingly farcical absurdities. A series of surrealistically dashed dinner plans — reasons ranging from a wake taking place in the adjoining room to soldiers bivouacking on the lawn — escalates into sexual, political and even cinematic shenanigans. Director Luis Buñuel dispenses with any differentiation between "reality" and "dream" but keeps the chaos cool. Oscar® winner, Best Foreign Language Film. DIR/SCR Luis Buñuel; SCR Jean-Claude Carrière; PROD Serge Silberman. France, 1972, color, 102 min. In French with English subtitles. RATED PG
