BEEKEEPER AND HIS SON, THE

This captivating documentary offers an intimate view into a rural beekeeping family in an emerging industrial China. After drifting as a migrant worker in the city for a year, 20-year-old Maofu returns to his family bee farm in rural northern China, bringing with him big ideas for marketing and honey sales. In contrast, his father, Lao Yu, emphasizes a heartfelt connection with the bees, drawn from generations of traditional beekeeping. Now in his declining years, Lao Yu has witnessed how environmental degradation and pollution have depleted his bee colonies, and he struggles with his son's modern ideas. With Lao Yu conflicted about whether Maofu should continue in the family business, Diedie Weng captures an unusual father-son standoff with intimacy, artfulness and unexpected humor.
