AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS (1956)
Winner of five Oscars® including Best Picture, this was the magnum opus of super-producer Michael Todd, Elizabeth Taylor's third husband, who died in the 1958 crash of his private jet "Lucky Liz." In the film's imaginative, lavish production design, with the up-and-coming Ken Adam working under the direction of hands-on associate producer William Cameron Menzies, this was a passing of the torch from one influential screen designer to another. Explorer Phileas Fogg (David Niven) and his valet Passepartout (Cantinflas) set out on a round-the-world adventure in hopes of winning a £20K bet. The proverbial cast of thousands includes Charles Boyer, Joe E. Brown, John Carradine, Charles Coburn, Ronald Colman, Noël Coward, Marlene Dietrich, John Gielgud, Hermione Gingold, Trevor Howard, Glynis Johns, Buster Keaton, Evelyn Keyes, Beatrice Lillie, Peter Lorre, Shirley MacLaine, Victor McLaglen, John Mills, Robert Morley, Edward R. Murrow, Robert Newton, George Raft, Cesar Romero, Frank Sinatra and Red Skelton. DIR Michael Anderson; SCR James Poe, John Farrow, S. J. Perelman, from the novel by Jules Verne; PROD Michael Todd. U.S., 1956, color, 197 min. including a 15-min. intermission, 35mm. RATED G
