ZERZURA

Written and developed with a Tuareg cast and shot in and around Agadez, Niger, this magical odyssey across the Sahara — possibly the first Nigerien acid Western — follows protagonist and guitarist Ahmoudou Madassane as he sets out in search of an enchanted oasis. Along the way, he crosses paths with nomads, djinn, bandits, gold-seekers and migrants. Scored throughout with improvised instrumental guitar by Madassane — a member of Mdou Moctar's band, who also collaborated with director Christopher Kirkley on his PURPLE RAIN remake RAIN THE COLOR OF BLUE WITH A LITTLE RED IN IT — ZERZURA blends folktale-esque surrealism with an ethnographic, documentary-like approach, to spectacular effect. Official Selection, 2018 New York African Film Festival. DIR/SCR/PROD Christopher Kirkley; SCR/PROD Rhissa Koutata, Ahmoudou Madassane, Guichene Mohamed. U.S./Niger, 2017, color, 87 min. In Tamashek with English subtitles. NOT RATED
